Facebook Privacy And Graph Search
Required reading if you use Facebook... #privacy #graphsearch"In Facebook's attempt to connect friends and friends of friends to one another, your information, now fed into a search engine, is more public ever before. Death of the Social Media Strategist?
Great must-read.
-
"
- A landing page that underperforms will not convert better simply by throwing a new 100,000 visitors to the page.
- An offer in the marketplace that isn't being accepted isn't going to be SOLD by building up LIKES and RECOMMENDATIONS on City Search or Yelp.
- If your seo sucks, your page rank will suck and your social ads will not perform up to snuff either. Who's in charge of your content?
- Social media is about telling stories. If the only story you have to tell is, "Hey, green weenies are 25% off today." you're not really adding much to the conversation. In order for social media to be social you have to have some content to socialize."

Reading: Ten Measures of Social Media ROI For Your Brand
Here's a great article to read on Ten Measures of Social Media ROI For Your Brand. The main takeaway is the misuse of social media by many to just amplify / count follows and not use social tools as a way to further integrate themselves into their community and improve their business process.
The comments below are thought-provoking, read them, they bring up new points and enhance the discussion on what exactly IS your ROI / measurement! It's a discussion I often have with clients, and all these points made within the article and comments are worthwhile to consider.

To Consider : Digital Marketing In 2011
http://connect.icrossing.co.uk/digital-marketing-heading-2011_5990
If you are not using these "best practices" of image naming, seo friendly website construction, adding your business to Google Maps, foursquare, etc., then you will be left behind.
As the Groupon / twitter / foursquare etc. entities intersect (and merge), those active will benefit.

Path
Y'know, we used to have an illegal after-hours bar...
At Le Disco, friends came in for late night ruckus, the location was secret, intimate, and the tales (still told) were legendary. (Although we avow no knowledge of what you speak.)
A few years ago, I started Salon. We keep mum about that too.
I've been going on and on about my belief in the Return Of Salon, magical evenings opened only to those with true merit. It's not that I don't embrace new experiences or people, and marketing is good for business, yet... I've always avoided the cheesy cheerleaders and jocks, and suspect most do too.. instinctively... cut... a... wide... swath when encountering those people.
Well, now we have Path.
We shall see.
I disagree with the Trust Factor they mention... data is always accessible... somehow.
Believe me, I know.
Instead, as always, I savor real life private experiences with a select, yet mix of old and new, few.
Salon in itself immediately weeds out the loud jock-and-cheerleader noise in favor of wit and intellect, the art of subtlety where in order to proceed with the plot, one must actually listen.
I am grateful for casting a wide net in more social realms: My ideal intimate evening would encompass friends in real life with friends met through the 'net in London, Paris, New York, and in tiny places I've never been where despite odds and thanks to the ether, their voice has carried across the distance and touched me, made me laugh.
If Path is so select, there would be no reason to broadcast the experience, because those select few would be there.
Oh, you argue "But not all the select few of our intimate gang came to my party, don't forget Isabel now lives abroad!"
I mean, seriously, isn't that what people use email for?
We... shall... see.

Web And Media In Richmond, Virginia News
I know you know we're busy, but I just realized this blog has not been updated since April!
On our Facebook Page we have been posting technology and advertising articles as we find 'em... but, as usual, we are too busy working on clients to make that page "purty" (see link below on how to do so). Won't you consider "liking" us on Facebook, if you want to access the latest news and issues we discover that might apply to your business without a lengthy essay?

Social Media Is A Bubble
Yesterday, Umair Haque asserted on Harvard Business Review that Social Media Is A Bubble: http://blogs.hbr.org/haque/2010/03/the_social_media_bubble.htmlBud Caddell's responded:
@bud_caddell: is social media a bubble? my response to @umairh's post from the HBR blog, http://bit.ly/b2ME5X
Both articles make valid points.
They don't surprise me so, because it just reflects the levels and degrees we all encounter in "real life." You can take the Pokemon approach and try to be the popular kid collecting large numbers of friends, yet not focus on deep relationships; you can also be the kid, maybe a bit quiet, who has a few, close friends who appreciate all their odd quirks and will be there for a lifetime.
How do you feel? Sometimes I find it fun and meaningful to share, reach out across cultural and geographical spans...and sometimes I pull back and go through extremely private stages, where I focus on a Salon mentality vs. The Public Community Potluck.
Both are fine...
But for business, it's always good to keep yourself out there, to be open, and sometimes the bonus is the unexpected personal reward for doing so: friends.
And yes, I mean "friends in real life met through internet tools."
I'm about to go through a pull back of public sharing. No reason, just... I'm in the mood to do so. It's that season and cycle again.
But sensing that, I also reflect on the real friends who are a real part of my life that I met PURELY through social media / online tools.
Think of our real friends in rural Pamplin: In a town with a population of 199, I would say, if I had to guess, that 95% of the people we've met were through the internet.
In New York, I have professional people in my field I would like to get to know that I've encountered purely through social media that I suspect could touch my life on a more real life, personal level. Through social media, I've gotten to know their merit, but also their humor and personality.
That's a lot of real life enhancement, a lot of real community, thanks to the internet / social media... Bubble? Maybe, but isn't everything?

C3 Richmond: Legal Wranglin' On The Internet And Rickrollin' In Real Life This Week.
Y'all hear about WBC comin' to #RVA? http://bit.ly/bNqY6LMy friend Rickrolled 'em.

- Another good recent example, a reminder to.. Think Before You Tweet (And Email, And Blabber At A Cocktail Party, And...) http://www.newcommbiz.com/think-before-you-tweet-the-do-not-tweet-list/
- Facebook Marketing in 2010: Promotion without Paying $10,000 Per Month http://hilinskyconsulting.com/blog/2010/02/25/promotions-on-facebook-in-2010-how-to-save-10000-per-month/
"As Facebook continues to grow beyond it’s current 400+ million worldwide users, it’s inevitable that the social platform will continue to solidify it’s efforts to monetize and ensure it’s future sustainability. Developers and marketing agencies were notified that starting November 2009, some big changes were in the pipeline.. new rules, new app specs and a new corporate attitude."
- Now if Facebook is patenting feed, did Google just patent geo-targeting? Oh the legalities that will certainly emerge this year! Has Google Just Patented Geo-Targeting?
- Wait! Here comes Apple! The 20 patents in question from the Apple-HTC suit: http://bit.ly/d20pGl

#SnOMG Doesn't Stop Data
No, really, #SnOMG was fun!Until yesterday, when the blizzard hit as our children were on a school bus truckin' up Interstate 64...
But even then, once they were safe, I enjoyed it and, on my lunch break, even attempted my first cross country skiing! And I only broke one pole!!!! (I never said I was graceful.)
Here's what we rounded up this week to consider:
- What search engines say about you (and for your clients): http://adage.com/digital/article?article_id=141956
- What's publicly available info on Facebook? It's not clear, not consistent, and its flaws may surprise you. http://bit.ly/9ISL5V
- Divers in Norway seem to dislike being disturbed by the Google Maps car during their daily tanning session http://bit.ly/9GQ5wD
- Here is a great article on the collision of Google and Facebook... a big picture view: http://regulargeek.com/2010/02/10/facebook-and-google-on-a-collision-course/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+RegularGeek+%28Regular+Geek
- And Jeremiah Owyang continues the thread in "Google Buzz vs Facebook vs MySpace vs Twitter" (with which I agree).
- Continuing on this topic, here's what Harvard Biz has to say: "Google's Buzz, Twitter and the Semi-Public Life" http://s.hbr.org/ahup7K
- Like the Super Bowl? Like Twitter? Then this data should be mesmerizing fer ya.
- Missed the Super Bowl ads? Were ya focusing on the nachos (and maybe some beer) too much? Forbes has created an embedder where you can watch 'em all, once available.
