Blogger Drops New Fonts Onto The Web
Sweet! Blogger drops new fonts onto the web:
"With a move that can only be described at “sheer brazenness,” Google’s weblog service, Blogger.com, has introduced a feature that may just be the tipping point between order and chaos in society: the introduction of 35 additional fonts to their blog service."
Read more here >> http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/2011/01/21/blogger-fonts-with-us
We recommend Blogger for our small and medium business clients because, as code needs to be changed, each person does not have to update / upgrade their local files but google does it automatically, universally, and hence, PAINLESSLY for our clients who are not comfortable messing with files and code.
Other blogging platforms may have shinier bells and whistles, but we find Blogger to have the biggest comfort level for these clients, and now, even more variety and styles with which creatively get their message across!

Here's a cautionary tale on why you need to be so careful about firms that sell you on SEO.
Here's a cautionary tale on why you need to be so careful about firms that sell you on SEO.
I think this article is mis-titled. It wasn't Google, it was tricky SEO firms that penalized this business.
This is why I place so much emphasis on my clients doing their own natural outreach, with their own voice, honestly. If you're hiring firms and seeing your traffic jump from a few hundred to a few thousand quickly, beware. I have yet to see a SEO firm here that is not using questionable tactics.
Building your online seo is a slow but steady climb where hard consistent building of your brand by YOU is rewarded. Quick tricks will usually come back to bite you.
Stay honest.

Web And Media In Richmond, Virginia News
I know you know we're busy, but I just realized this blog has not been updated since April!
On our Facebook Page we have been posting technology and advertising articles as we find 'em... but, as usual, we are too busy working on clients to make that page "purty" (see link below on how to do so). Won't you consider "liking" us on Facebook, if you want to access the latest news and issues we discover that might apply to your business without a lengthy essay?

In the meantime, here are some articles and notes I found intriguing or helpful recently:

C3 Richmond Looks At The Web: Privacy, Analysis, And Law.
I'm going to be interested to see how internet culture changes in 2010-2011.Maybe after all of this openness / open source cheering and blabbing a backlash will arise: and the equivalent of exclusive private clubs will form where only those in the know have the right to that data... We shall see...
In the meantime I'll just keep trying to hang on to mah Foursquare crown of Mayor o' CCV...
*Sigh*
That's hard work, I have to go to the gym like three times a week now!
Here, the beloved Trevor Dickenson shares his own Foursquare / Oversharing Twitter experience and thoughts with Richmond's Channel 12 News:
Just remember: (Which I have always said, and is just practical good social etiquette / business practice) Always remember data is public, and what you type can be seen by the world.

C3 Richmond: Web + New Media Monday Short Report
Happy Monday at C3 Richmond, Copeland Casati Media!- FYI: Today they rolled out the next generation of Google Ad Manager: You might want to go over the new changes here: http://googleadmanager.blogspot.com/2010/02/next-generation-of-google-ad-manager.html?utm_source=gam_upgrade_email&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=gam%2Bupgrade
- Extreme Firefox vulnerability, hello: http://bit.ly/d0Js4p
- Do you use Facebook? PAY ATTENTION:
It all started when I noticed a client, who was not a "friend" of mine on Facebook, had joined a Fan Page I had just joined, caught my eye. "Awww...!" and I clicked on her profile to friend-request her. To my surprise, there were photos of her one year old daughter, with her daughter's name, their neighborhood information... concerned, I emailed her and she changed her privacy settings accordingly. Later that week, a friend's husband, who is not my Facebook friend, appeared on another event with me, and I did the same thing: clicked on his profile to friend request him, then, still not a friend, saw pictures of his daughter, her name, their easy-to-be-found unusual last names...!
Curious, I logged out of Facebook and spot-checked a few people I knew... and was BLOWN AWAY. Overwhelmingly their profiles revealed confidential information I am certain they would not want out in the ether. I encourage you all to log out and see what your and your family profiles, reveal. (I never have pictures of my children's faces or names on the internet. Guess what: I may be diligent but Grandma wasn't and needed to be corrected.)
Three settings everyone should know: http://www.nytimes.com/external/readwriteweb/2010/01/20/20readwriteweb-the-3-facebook-settings-every-user-should-c-29287.html?WT.mc_id=NYT-E-I-NYT-E-AT-0203-L18

#SnOMG Doesn't Stop Data
No, really, #SnOMG was fun!Until yesterday, when the blizzard hit as our children were on a school bus truckin' up Interstate 64...
But even then, once they were safe, I enjoyed it and, on my lunch break, even attempted my first cross country skiing! And I only broke one pole!!!! (I never said I was graceful.)
Here's what we rounded up this week to consider:
- What search engines say about you (and for your clients): http://adage.com/digital/article?article_id=141956
- What's publicly available info on Facebook? It's not clear, not consistent, and its flaws may surprise you. http://bit.ly/9ISL5V

Richmond Web + Media C3 Weekly Roundup: Copeland Casati Media
Lalala...running fast, actually, flying. Here's what we've got this week.
- This is what you need to know about Google Personalized Search.
- "Google Gets Its First Taste Of Facebook’s Realtime Stream" http://ff.im/-czwKH
- And guess what? Facebook Will Be Google-able (If Your Profile is Set to Public)
Many of you balk, but know that if getting found via the web is important to you... it's something to consider, especially as realtime results pick up weight. - People protest Social Media is for the narcissistic. Let's talk about YOU.
- Even more,
Social Search: Customers Influence Search Results Over Brands - *Sigh*... Stuck at home? (Um not that I ever am. No. Really.) UStream.com allows you to view, participate in events no matter where you're located. Richmond's Social Media Club used it for their focus on social media in film and music! Watching from afar (dag), the user experience seemed much better than the trials and errors I encountered with TwitCam. I will definitely be testing out UStream the next time I... leave and do something, *anything* interesting. (Not that those cams were interesting. One was of a rocking chair. Niiiiiiiice. #NeedsALife...)
This two minute video breaks it down to the big picture:
I understand this is confusing, new territory. But it's always good to question, keep an eye out for new issues on the horizon- you never know when what you think is perpetual will be shaken. See it as liberating, be curious. In business it is good to review data, and look at unconsidered opportunity.
For all the data and facts and passionate strategy... keep yer heart, listen to your intuition... backed up, of course, with good decision-making facts. (Wonder what The Naked Portfolio Manager would say on this?)

Bloody Week! Phishers and Search Engine Fights and Security! Richmond's C3 Takes It On, At Copeland Casati Media.
It's a pain to take the time to research, then track down Google's proper area in each specific instance to report bad sites to Google, but discovering a malware or phishing site and not doing so is worse. So after (again) reporting a phishing site I discovered that mimics twitter making user's profiles show up in Google Web Alerts, so that you *think* you are clicking onto twitter to see that person's profile (at which point they ask you to "log in" therefore getting your password...), I chuckled when I got Google's "thank you for submitting" message:Ayyyyyyyyyymen, BigBruthuhFriend! High five and off I sauntered to continue work.

What are YOU thankful for?
I'm thankful for great friends. We really are really fortunate in the great people whom we hold close to us.
I'm thankful for the little unexpected joys and laughs that our daily life brings us (and that I all too often share on twitter)...
I'm thankful that I can sometimes somehow help to make someone else's world better, even if I will never meet them.
I'm thankful for the internet, how it allows me to hear about and be touched by far away people, discover neat voices in my own community I had never encountered, and stay in touch with old friends that moved geographically, yet with whom I can still settle down on the couch and have a good girl talk with via skype, looking each other eye to eye as we talk.
I hope you all have a good Thanksgiving. I am very thankful.

Richmond Web + Media C3 Roundup: Copeland Casati Media
Locally, in Virginia, we all got hit with the storm. I hope you, and your community, made it through alright. Through technology, I was able to be closer to my friends who have a boatyard on the bay, and check on my family's house as the storm progressed, then ebbed. My friends Matt and Jen uploaded *crazy* videos of the storm on YouTube and FaceBook
- I breathlessly watched multiple views from the docks at a local marina's web cam, which refreshed every 30 seconds
- Later, a neighbor emailed pictures of the house and my aunt's house so that, even though the road was still flooded and we were unable to reach the house, we could see how we, and other family members and neighbors, fared. (Here's our dock under water, in the picture on the right...)
- And I literally went, "Aaaaaaaa!" when Jen, the pirate bandit she is (that's why we're friends : ) ), sent me this: A video of our house after the storm. And the boat is ok. Even the canoe is still there.
- Not just Microsoft. Not just Google. T'ain't stopping there: Twitter and LinkedIn. Really! (Do we care? Kind of. But not passionately.)
- Right when you got the hang o' twitter lingo and methods, the RT (retweet) evolves. Here's a good article to update you on what's going on: "Retweets Will Never Be The Same (Unless You Want Them To Be)"
I keep bringing up SideWiki... here's how to keep track of your own site SideWiki via rss.
Again, although I "get" the arguments FOR SideWiki, it just doesn't feel right. I have not seen one use of it in a traditional, wiki, helpful way.
I understand that people talk. And that they talk about your business, and that you need to be out there, engaging them, ensuring you are part of the conversation about your own brand. But shouldn't you have the right to shut the door in your house, on your own site, at the end of the day, to detractors? (Note: SideWiki is through the browser, not actually on the site, but visually it is the same effect.)
I "get it," I really do. But I can't help but wonder what Miss Manners would say.
As Amy agreed, "'If you can't say something nice, at least try not to flame the pants off of them?'"
